چکیده

In this paper we study changes of the articulatory organs from young adulthood to old age. In particular, we focus on how the larynx and vocal folds age along with the rest of the body. The objective of the paper is to automatically compute the effects of vocal aging on fundamental frequency and the formants. We compare trends of the fundamental, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd formant frequencies as the age progresses. We also investigate how different phonemes vowels in particular are affected by vocal aging. The data consists of Queen Elizabeth II’s annual Christmas speech from the age of 26 to 76. The idea is to have the same speaker over a long period of time. The results indicate that vocal aging causes the decline of the fundamental and 1st formant frequencies while the 2nd and 3rd formants are not closely correlated to vocal aging. In general, the correlation between the fundamental frequency and age is -0.90, while the average correlation for the 1st formant and age is -0.81. In particular, the correlation between the 1st formant frequencies of phoneme ‘o’ and age is -0.89 while for the 2nd formant it is 0.34.

Effects of Aging on Vocal Fundamental Frequency and Vowel Formants in Men and Women.

PURPOSE This study reports data on vocal fundamental frequency (fo) and the first four formant frequencies (F1, F2, F3, F4) for four vowels produced by speakers in three adult age cohorts, in a test of the null hypothesis that there are no age-related changes in these variables. Participants were 43 men and 53 women between the ages of 20 and 92 years. RESULTS The most consistent age-related ...

Immediate effects of vocal warm-up exercises on elementary teachers' voice

Introduction: Teachers are a large group of professional voice users who are exposed to many voice problems. Vocal warm-up exercises (VWUE) can prepare the muscles involved in vocalization before teaching and can reduce voice damage in teachers. However, limited studies have examined the effects of VWUE on teachers' voices. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the immediate...

Acoustic cues to identity and predator context in meerkat barks

Formants, the resonance frequencies of the vocal tract, are the key acoustic parameters underlying vowel identity in human speech. However, recent work on nonhuman animal communication systems has shown that formant variation provides potentially important information to receivers about static and dynamic attributes of callers. Meerkats, Suricata suricatta, produce broadband noisy bark vocalisa...

Acoustic characteristics of the metallic voice quality.

PURPOSE To characterize the fundamental frequency and the frequency of the formants F1, F2, F3, and F4 from vocal emissions of amateur singers with metallic voice quality. METHODS There were 60 amateur female singers aged between 18 and 60 years old; 30 women with metallic voice quality forming the study group (SG) and 30 women without such a vocal quality forming control group (CG). The samp...

Volitional exaggeration of body size through fundamental and formant frequency modulation in humans

Several mammalian species scale their voice fundamental frequency (F0) and formant frequencies in competitive and mating contexts, reducing vocal tract and laryngeal allometry thereby exaggerating apparent body size. Although humans' rare capacity to volitionally modulate these same frequencies is thought to subserve articulated speech, the potential function of voice frequency modulation in hu...
